The Ministry of Labour and Social Economy organized the European Conference “Social Economy: People, Planet, Action” in San Sebastian, Spain on November 13-14, 2023. The event was part of Spain’s strategic priorities for its Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) in the second half of 2023 (July 1 – December 31).

The conference brought together over 600 participants from across Europe and the world to promote social economy models that prioritize people and planet over profit, like cooperatives, mutuals, associations, foundations and social enterprises.

The European Conference “Social Economy: People, Planet, Action”
Key topics include the UN Resolution on social and solidarity economy, the EU Social Economy Action Plan, and the role of social economy in the green and digital transitions. High-level speakers from European institutions, governments, academia and social economy enterprises participated.
This conference build on previous events held under the French Presidency in Strasbourg in 2022 and the Swedish Presidency in Gothenburg in June 2023. It also connects to the next conference to be held in Belgium in February 2024.
Promoting the social economy is one of Spain’s four priorities during its Council Presidency, along with strategic industries and technologies green transition, and the reform of the electricity market. Spain wants to showcase social economy models as an alternative to traditional profit-driven economics.
The conference in San Sebastian was part of a series of events happening in the city after it was named the Spanish Capital of Social Economy for 2023. It aligned with the goals of promoting quality employment, cooperation, integration and territorial cohesion.

Angela Achiței, President of ADV Romania was invited to speak in the “Youth and Social Economy: common values ” workshop, held on November 13. She shared insights from the ADV Romania projects focusing on youth and social economy.
