Workers with Support Needs (WSNs) are central to the mission of WISEs. The B-WISE project has brought significant insights into understanding the unique challenges, skills gaps, and aspirations of WSNs across Europe. By mapping their diverse profiles and exploring tailored solutions, B-WISE project helps WISEs provide meaningful employment opportunities while fostering social inclusion. With the right support, WSNs can overcome barriers, gain independence, and contribute significantly to the workforce. Let’s explore the key WSN personas identified through this project and how WISEs can empower them.
1. The Safely Here
The Safely Here persona is usually a male, around 45 years old, with intellectual disabilities that result in cognitive impairments. He values his job immensely, finding safety and satisfaction in routine tasks with minimal stress. While his digital skills are limited to basic personal use, such as emails and social media, he is not interested in advancing them further. Having struggled in past job searches, he appreciates the stability and support offered by WISEs. His goal is to maintain his current job, where he feels trusted and valued, while being open to learning new skills as needed.
2. The Soft-Unskilled
The Soft-Unskilled persona is typically a woman, around 40 years old, who has faced significant health challenges or an accident that limits her ability to participate in the open labor market. She brings average digital skills, often using tools like CRMs or communication apps in her personal and professional life. Her past experiences in the labor market were marked by instability, but she now thrives in WISEs by performing simple tasks with clear instructions and regular supervision. Her future aspirations focus on remaining in the supportive environment of the WISE, where she feels appreciated and can continue to grow.
3. The Growth-Oriented
The Growth-Oriented persona is often a woman in her 30s or 40s who has been long-term unemployed due to a lack of skills or opportunities. She values the empathy and understanding shown by the WISE team, which helps her regain confidence. While her digital skills are basic, she is open to learning more and often participates in WISE-organized training. She takes on small responsibilities within her role and is eager to grow within the organization, showing potential to take on more significant roles in the future.
4. The Revenant
The Revenant persona is usually a male in his mid-30s who comes from a challenging background, often marked by family difficulties, substance abuse, or trouble with authorities. After a history of unstable jobs, he has found stability and support at the WISE. His medium-level digital skills allow him to work autonomously on a variety of tasks, and he is open to improving them further despite occasional fears of learning new technologies. His ultimate goal is to transition back into the open labor market, achieving an independent and stable life while continuing to build his skills and confidence.
Challenges and Support Needs
WSNs face unique challenges that require tailored interventions:
- Barriers to Employment: Many WSNs struggle with a lack of formal education, previous negative work experiences, or health-related limitations.
- Digital Literacy Gaps: While some WSNs have basic digital skills, many require additional training to fully utilize technology in their roles.
- Emotional and Psychological Needs: Confidence building and emotional support are crucial, as many WSNs have faced rejection or instability in their past work experiences.
Strategies for Empowering WSNs
- Individualized Training: Programs tailored to each persona’s skills and goals can help WSNs gain confidence and improve their job performance.
- Assistive Technologies: Providing simple and accessible tools, such as task management apps or adaptive devices, can help WSNs work more independently.
- Mentorship and Counseling: One-on-one support from mentors helps WSNs navigate workplace challenges and develop their potential.
- Safe Work Environments: WISEs should continue to create supportive spaces where WSNs feel valued, understood, and empowered to contribute.
